27 July 2020
We have noted with disgust the hunt of our union President Cde Obert Masaraure and our national Secretary General Cde Robson Chere by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, ZRP ahead of the historic 31 July protests. Our leaders never applied for employment at Zimbabwe Republic Police for them to be physically interviewed. We have endorsed the 31 July protests as a union, because it is our right as workers and citizens to demonstrate against a persistent stubborn syndicate of corrupt top government officials who have destroyed the lives of many Zimbabweans by siphoning millions of USD from national treasury and plundering our natural resources for their personal use.We are noting the Zimbabwe Republic Police, ZRP is nolonger serving interests of the public, rather it’s now an institution controlled to serve and protect the interests of looters in government. The ZRP must focus on arresting criminals in government and hands off our union leaders.
Our leaders are fighting for labour justice ensuring that the national resources are distributed equally towards improving the welfare of teachers in the form of a living wage. Their role in fighting corruption has touched the raw nerve of looters who are now using public resources as well as abusing junior police officers to persecute our union leaders. The government of President Mnangagwa must focus on improving the economy and lives of Zimbabweans rather than protecting looters.
This archaic and barbaric tactic of harassing trade unionists and other activists, shrinking the civic space is a clear sign of a government that is failing to respect the rights of it’s citizens. Our leaders have long deserted their houses in fear of their lives, the state has unleashed it’s thugs who have raided the residences of our leaders several times this month baying for their blood, just for speaking against corruption and economic mismanagement.
As Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ we are going to participate in the 31 July protests unabated regardless of endless threats on our leaders and members by the state agents. We have mobilised thousands of teachers and hundreds community action committees around the country to fight corruption, slavery and inequality on 31 July 2020.
