ARTUZ DISMISSES ZIMTA’S CALL TO DEATH

25 January 2020

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe is shocked, appalled and dismayed by the high level of arrogance, ignorance and recklessness of the statement that emanated from the Zimta Offices issued by one Sifiso Ndlovu. This statement calling for the opening of schools when the country is undergoing a serious wave of Covid19 that is infecting large numbers nationwide and killing without mercy is not only a sign of institutionalized daylight witchcraft but is satanic and diabolic and does not deserve to be tolerated even in the slightest bit.

Common sense and logic should be a defining character in the teaching profession but it seems as if common sense is not common to everyone and logic seems to have taken an oath of silence in the minds of our erstwhile brother. The decision of opening schools in 2020 when Covid19 was still a threat was misinformed and proved costly when the virus started ravaging society and schools became hot zones of the pandemic with countless learners and teachers getting infected and succumbing to the deadly pandemic. Choosing to call for the opening of schools at such a moment signals madness on a grand scale when the national call is about social distancing, staying at home to avoid huge crowds and trying to contain the virus.

The reasonable and only acceptable approach at this time is to call for alternative ways of learning and teaching of which the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe and the rest of the country is agreeing to, ARTUZ celebrated International Day of Education by hosting a discussion that was providing alternative ways of learning. The government should set up an Educational Equalization Fund that is set to bridge the gap between rural and urban school system to balance the scale of accessing quality education due to the needs associated with long distance learning and access to the internet because of online learning.

The discussion on the opening of schools should be centered around key priorities that include testing of all learners, teachers and all school staff before admitting them in schools, funding of adherence to government prepared standard operating procedure should be a key priority, resource mobilization before schools open especially on issues to do with PPE’s. ARTUZ is consulting education stakeholders to come up with a comprehensive “Education Emergencies Charter.” The Charter will be presented to government, the blueprint will articulate ways of sustaining provision of education during emergencies such as the obtaining Covid19 pandemic.

The government of Zimbabwe has reduced the number of departments that are open and has ordered non- essential staff to remain home in order to contain the spread of Covid19 and now it boggles the mind that when teachers are contracting the virus during invigilation of exams and marking when the numbers are reduced some are at the forefront and mountaintop calling for the opening of schools, it’s a good idea to speak your mind but it’s dangerous when the mind that’s doing the speaking has a permanent tendency of swimming in the rivers of madness.

“SCHOOLS SHOULD REMAIN CLOSED, NO TO ADVOCATED GENOCIDE BY OPENING OF SCHOOLS, COVID IS REAL AND PEOPLE SHOULD STAY HOME.”
