18 December 2020
The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ President cde Obert Masaraure and Masvingo Provincial Secretary for Gender and Welfare cde Sheila Chisirimunhu are appearing in court at 8:30am today at Masvingo Magistrates Court.
The duo is accused of participating in a gathering with the intention of causing public violence, this emanated from an arrest made on 22 June 2020 at Mucheke District Education Offices Masvingo when ARTUZ launched a nationwide protest against the deteriorating standards in the education sector and poor welfare of teachers.
Magistrate Ndlovu is giving a ruling today, the state failed to provide enough evidence in previous court appearances to prove cde Masaraure and cde Chisirimunhu guilty. The case has dragged in the courts since June. We hope justice will be served today and free our leadership because justice delayed is justice denied.
As ARTUZ, we are worried about the continuous harassment of our leaders whenever they exercise their constitutional rights of holding the state accountable. The continuous Judiciary harassment and unlawful arrests of our leaders will not break our fighting spirit, we will continue to push for an inclusive quality education system and better salaries of teachers.
We are encouraging our members, progressive citizens and organizations to give solidarity to our leaders, either physically or online.
#FreeMasaraureFreeChisirimunhu Aluta continua.
