The most popular narrative among counter progressive forces this year, was “Unions are not effective.” This would also be reinforced by the question, ” Why are you not part of the NJNC.” Yellow Unions would further ask, “How do you expect ARTUZ to represent you when they are not in the NJNC?”
ARTUZ attempted to explain the fundamental challenges blighting labour through a series of press statements. We realised that teachers were failing to understand our viewpoint.
We went a step further and commissioned a research on the barriers hindering teachers from enjoying their labour rights as espoused in section 65 of the constitution. We designed a research framework and contracted labour experts, Munyaradzi Gwisai and Edmore Matika to conduct the research for our Union.
ARTUZ has scored a first by producing a detailed report unpacking the operating environment for teacher unions and making recommendations on how to march towards labour justice. The report is dubbed, “Labour Justice Index for Teaching Profession.”
We invite you our esteemed members, to read the report and give us feedback before we publish our findings in early January. When you read the report you will begin to appreciate the structural challenges confronting us, so that you do not focus on symptoms. We should be able to reform the rotten system from point of knowing.
The arrest of Sheila, the salary crisis and COVID19 crisis among others are just symptoms of a deep rooted crisis.
Please join us and adopt a systems approach as we demand labour justice from our employer.
