The COVID-19 pandemic has negatively affected the learning process in schools. We however applauded the early closure of schools as a way of preventing learners and teachers from being easily exposed to the deadly virus.
With the lockdown still going on, it is difficult for learners to have enough preparations for the Zimsec June 2020 public examinations. Teachers are failing to have access to fully furnish their learners for the public examinations that are due in less than 2 months.
As Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, (ARTUZ) we are encouraging the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education together with Zimsec to postpone the June 2020 public examinations, since sitting candidates’ preparations are being affected by the emergency responses to COVID-19 pandemic.
We have also noted that the online registration process by Zimsec is disadvantaging learners especially in rural areas, they do not have access to internet due to high cost of data bundles and the unavailability of network coverage in some remote areas.
So, it is of paramount importance for Zimsec to shelve the June 2020 public examinations until the situation return to normalcy. Furthermore, the cases of corona virus infections are increasing globally, the risk of exposing learners and teachers to COVID-19 is high as some registered private candidates will come from extremely affected countries to sit for the same examinations with school candidates.
Currently, some organizations including our union ARTUZ, are conducting free online lessons on internet or WhatsApp platforms for all writing classes to try and help the learners. However, only a few are benefitting since majority especially in rural areas do not have access to internet and Whatsapp platforms.
Postponing the June 2020 public examinations, will be a great step in fighting COVID-19 and, also a positive way to avoid producing academically half baked learners.
Let’s continue to practice strict hygiene and social distancing to avoid the spread of COVID-19
